This volume is a product of a collaborative research project organised by four Asian regional Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The idea for this undertaking came in the aftermath of the November 1994 meeting of the APEC in Bogor, Indonesia. a planned parallel NGO forum in Jakarta was marginalised by the Suharto government, while the media glossed over the social and environmental implications of what would be the world's largest free trade area.
