JOB PURPOSE
▪ To contribute to the development and implementation of innovative projects for the new Focus Programme;
▪ To conduct and communicate research;
▪ To support the development of effective advocacy and strong social movements.
REPORTING LINES
Programme Officer will report to India/South Asia Coordinator
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Coordinator (India/South Asia) and the Executive Director (Focus Head Office, Bangkok) in developing the new Focus programme and generating ideas and projects
- In consultation with the Coordinator, conceptualise, develop and implement programme activities including, for example
- undertaking specific research or policy analysis
- developing ToRs for research and guiding them in the implementation of their research projects
- establishing and managing national level advocacy partnerships / alliances on key Focus issues
- supporting capacity building for social movements and grassroots organizations delivering effective programme information and communication materials
- Develop and nurture alliances and strong working relationships with appropriate national, subregional/regional and international programme partners
- Develop a strong analysis local, national and sub-regional contexts to inform everything Focus does
- Actively participate and contribute to team processes
- Serve as a resource person for training and capacity building activities organised by Focus staff and partners
- Contribute to the effective management of project budgets and expenditure
- Assist the Coordinator in preparing funding proposals and reports
- Ensure project activities are reviewed and critically assessed on a regular basis
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- In depth knowledge of one or more of the following issues: trade, finance, deglobalisation
- An understanding of India’s growing global ambitions and its relationship with the rest of the world, including in the sub-region
- Good understanding of social movements in the relevant sub-region and national/sub-regional/regional political actors
- Knowledge of the socio-economic, political and ecological conditions in the sub-region
- A consultative, participative and gender-sensitive approach to work
- Expertise in one of the following - Trade and Finance, commons and climate; and with an overarching analytical background in all
- Strong organisational skills and good project management and strategic planning skills
- Demonstrated analytical, conceptual thinking skills
- Ability to understand complex issues and information from different sources and present this in simple and clear language
- Sound understanding and experience of research problem identification, research methods and research implementation; a Masters or other higher-level research degree would be an advantage
- Good facilitation, influencing and persuasive skills, with ability to build strong, credible relationships and to communicate and transfer information to a wide audience
- Excellent written and verbal English and fluency in at least one other language relevant to the sub- region.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in policy, advocacy and campaigns.
- Ability to multi-task, working under pressure and set priorities. A track record of delivering on time and on budget
- Ability to be creative and innovative
- A history of activism and strong commitment to social justice;
- Energy, flexibility and resilience
- Excellent team work skills and the ability to build good relations both internally and externally
- Willing to travel extensively, as required.
Desirable
- Additional languages spoken in the sub-region would be a bonus
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
These posts are offered on 2 year contracts.
Salary Range: Rs. 45,000 - 65,000 per month, depending on skills and experience
BENEFITS PACKAGE INCLUDES
Insurance: Health/medical insurance for the employee, their partner/spouse and children, or one parent
Paid leave: 20 days of vacation leave (a maximum of 10 days can be carried over into the first month of the following year. Up to 15 days of sick leave. Special leaves – compensatory, bereavement, etc. and emergency leave – up to 10 days, only on approval by the Operations Manager
