College students, and all citizens of Mumbai!
Wear white on July 26th. White for peace and a memorial to the dead.
If you wear uniform, or you don’t own anything white, wear a white band!
The seven blasts on suburban trains on July 11 have shocked Mumbai and the world. Yet, Mumbaikars not only kept calm, they went out of their way to help the injured and the families of the dead. Among the first to rush to the aid of the stricken trains were the city's poorest residents, who live in slums lining the railway tracks. They rushed out to offer their bed sheets to be used as stretchers for the injured. Later, thousands thronged hospitals to donate blood and comfort the families of the bereaved.

Israel’s attack on the Freedom Flotilla on 31 May 2010, in light of its deadly siege on Gaza, was an urgent call to the international community to force Israel to comply with her obligations under international law. Israel’s latest atrocities must be seen in the context of decades of Israeli impunity, and ongoing Israeli policies of the Judaization of Jerusalem, the ethnic cleaning in the Naqab (Negev), the continued construction of settlements and the Wall. The international community’s response to the attacks through storms of protests and boycott, divestment and sanctions initiatives has sent a strong message. In light of Israel’s complete disregard of humanitarian law and international appeals, international civil society must undertake the task of holding Israel accountable for its egregious acts of violence and violations of law.

by Aditi Bhaduri

What happens when a young out-of-work French writer is debt-ridden and hounded for rent? He is desperate enough to take up a position offered in the badlands of Afghanistan.

And thus unfolds the story of writer Nicolas Wild in war-torn Kabul, writing a comic book explaining the Afghan constitution to children, and working on a recruitment campaign for the Afghan army.

En route to Kabul he has a stopover in the Azerbaijani capital Baku and when it stretches into a week, with flights cancelled thrice in a row, Wild already has a premonition of what is to come. What he is not prepared for, however, is the life that expats lead in the warzone that is Afghanistan — one of the biggest money-spinners in the world.

Sunrise in the valley: 25 years of the Narmada Bachao Andolan A photo essay

This year the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save the Narmada Movement) completed 25 years. Though begun as a campaign against dams on the River Narmada, the NBA has evolved into a national campaign with an incisive critique on the so called ‘development’ model currently being pursued in India. For over two decades, the NBA has been a shining light for activists and campaigns for environment justice across the world.

Friends of the NBA rallied to the valley for a series of events that began with a meeting in Dhadgaon (Maharastra) on 22 October. The celebrations closed with a massive rally and convention in Badwani (Madhya Pradesh). Here is photo essay that offers us vignettes from the 25th NBA anniversary celebrations.
