Hon’ble Prime Minister,
The WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong in December 2005 is coming closer and the developing countries are facing extreme pressure from the developed countries to reach to an agreement. Keeping in view the deep agrarian crisis in India, every concerned Bharatiye is quite apprehensive about India’s position on Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) and what would be our gain and where we would loose in the ongoing negotiations on the Doha development agenda. Even though the UPA government claims about transparency and accountability to the people of the country, yet no attempt has been made by the government to make public its proposals for the Hong Kong Ministerial.

Farmers Protest against WTO in Mumbai |

More than 50,000 farmers from 14 states of India including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Uttranchal, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Maharashtra belonging to different farmers unions participated in a huge Rally against WTO in Mumbai. The Rally was organised by Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers Movements, which is a coalition of farmer unions from across the country, which include the Bhartiya Kissan Union (All India), the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, the Shetkari Sangathana (Maharashtra), the Madhya Pradesh Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, the Tamil Nadu Farmers and Workers Party, and the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Labourers Union. The main leaders who spoke at the Rally include Mr. Mahender Singh Tikait, Mr. Yudhvir Singh, Mr. Vijay Jawandia, Dr. Sunilam, Ms. Chukki Najundaswami, Mr. Selvam Muthu, Mr. Rakesh Tikait and others.

Subject: Keep Agriculture out of WTO
Dear Hon’ble Prime Minister,
You have promised relief to India’s farmers during your very first visit, to Andhra Pradesh to meet families of farmers who had taken their lives due to indebtedness. Farmers’ suicides are not restricted to Andhra Pradesh. Thousands of farmers in different other parts of India including Punjab-the lands of the Green Revolution- are taking their lives.

A brief report of the Strategy meeting on WTO and Agriculture held on 23rd September 2005 in the Press Club in Mumbai
The one-day strategy meeting on Maharastra Agriculture and WTO was held on 23rd September 2005 at the Mumbai Press Club and representatives of the political parties, farmers unions, trade unions, ngos and academia attended this meeting. The meeting was chaired by Shri Com. BK Kango.
