Dear Sir,
We, the undersigned, are seriously concerned about the health of 13 under trial prisoners, allegedly Naxalites or Naxal sympathizers, in Nagpur jail who have been on hunger strike since the 7th of April, 2008. The issues for which they have launched the hunger strike are serious and urgent. They have already petitioned the state authorities drawing attention to the following issues:

* The police have been using Sec. 110 CrPC (Security for good behavior from habitual offenders) to re-arrest those who have been acquitted by the judiciary, on the grounds that they are accused of abetting Naxalites in commission of crimes. Already two such cases have happened. Jayakka was re-arrested on 29/3/2008 after being acquitted and Mallesh Sailu was also re-arrested on release on 1/4/2008. Both should be unconditionally released.

Statement of people’s organizations on high food prices: time for a comprehensive shift in economic policy

THE PRESENT

1. Food price increases in Sri Lanka - higher than global increases.
World food prices increased by 40% last year and in Sri Lanka it was much higher. The price of essential food such as rice, bread and milk increased two or three times and the impact is greatest on the poor who spend about 80% of their income on food. This is part of a global crisis in which more and more people cannot feed themselves or their children. Alongside the current high cost of living increase this situation is extremely dangerous.

Statement on Gaza and of Solidarity with 60 Years of Palestinian Resistance to Israeli Colonialism, Racism and Zionism

The year 2008 is the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, the catastrophe marked by the destruction or depopulation of more than 400 Palestinian villages through massacre and intimidation and the expulsion of 750,000 Palestinian people from their lands, communities and homes. Since then, Palestinians have lived under occupation, as refugees, and as second class citizens on their own land; Israel's assault against the indigenous Palestinian communities continues with unremitting brutality. In Gaza, with the support of the US government and its allies, Israel, has effectively cut off food, water, electricity, humanitarian aid, medical supplies and the means of basic employment or trade, despite the pretense of 'disengagement' offered by Israeli withdrawal of settlements.

Johannesburg High Court declares prepaid water meters unconstitutional - and more!

JOHANNESBURG, 30 April 2008 — The Johannesburg High Court today declared prepaid water meters unconstitutional.  Judge Tsoka ordered that the limitation of free basic water to 25 litres of water per person per day be set aside. The City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Water must instead now supply residents with 50 litres per person per day. Furthermore, the court declared that the choice given to residents of either a prepaid meter or a standpipe for water provision in Phiri is also unlawful. And on top of that, Judge Tsoka determined that the City should bear the legal costs of the applicants.
