NAGPUR- June16, 2008

Fertilizer and Cotton seed shortage resulted in Crop loan starved Six more Vidarbha farmers suicides in last two days -VJAS

One side even loan waiver of Rs. 71,000 crore is announced  bankers are till awaiting orders and acute unprecedented cotton seed and fertilizer artificial shortage has made condition of distressed farmers much more hostile to commit suicide as Crop loan starved  Six more farmers suicides in last two days as they failed to   buy  seed and fertilizer in black market. Recent victims of the Vidarbha agrarian crisis are

1.Dinkar Rathode In Buldhana
2.Shivram Jadhav In Buldhana
3.Kishore Tadhe In Buldhana
4.Pandurang Pawar In Amravati
5.Maroti Duck In Wardha
6.Satish Wanjari In Amaravati

VJAS accused Maharashtra Govt. and Indian govt. for these farmers’ suicides as in all cases these farmers are debt trapped and were forced to take fresh crop loan from money lenders and   artificial shortage of seed and fertilizer added fuel in the distress forcing them to kill themselves, Kishor Tiwari of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti informed in press release today.

"If institutional credit and proper supply of seed and fertilizer would have been there then these unfortunate farm suicides would have been avoided. In fact the demand of seed and fertilizer was known to agriculture dep't. In advance but they failed to act in time and resulted in crisis .we suspect this is gifted crisis by corrupt babus who are link  with MNC,s  and fertilizer traders , Kishor Tiwari of VJAS added.

Earlier It is reported from Latur and Amaravati that farmers agitating and on warpath to get seed and fertilizer, The protests over the fertilizer crunch in Karnataka have already claimed one life but unrest is also building in neighboring Maharashtra. Angry farmers in Vidarbha's Amravati district are agitating as the shortage hits just as sowing season begins. By the government's own admission, the state has a 60 per cent shortage in fertilizer supplies. This in a region that has given the state its CM and the country's home minister. The state government says it is helpless because supplies from the Centre have not reached on time. Also demand has shot up with the rise in soyabean cultivation. this is not in line with fact as seed and fertilizer shortage in planed act of trader to exploit dying farmers of Maharashtra.

Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti(VJAS) has urged Indian prime minister Dr. Mammohan Singhji to look in to vidarbha seed and fertilizer crisis as rosy picture created by administration that there is no shortage of fertilizer and seed in vidarbha is misleading. Indian govt. should requisite supply of fertilizer and seed in order to avoid law and order problem, Tiwari added
