As you are aware that the International Financial Institutions (IFIs) like the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have rapidly penetrated into India's North East. This trend, which is particularly visible since 2001, will have long-term consequences on the many communities, their political aspirations, and to the environment. It is also obvious that these institutions with their clearly spelt out neo-liberal agenda and marketised formulations are here to further their goals of liberalization, privatization and globalization. What is particularly troubling is that there has been no opportunity provided to publicly discuss their entry and that none of our elected members took care to even debate in their respective Assemblies and other forums.
Seeing this undemocratic entry and future consequences, some groups in the region felt that we urgently sit down together to at least begin discussing these 'new' entry and to prepare an action plan accordingly. A detailed Concept Note on the reasons for holding this meeting is also enclosed here. It is in this context that we would like to invite you to participate in these three days gathering. This meeting will be essentially focused on learning about IFIs & brainstorming on related issues. Movement representatives, student's unions, workers union, farmer groups, academics, comrades, NGOs etc. are expected for this meeting to collectively contribute to understanding IFIs, their presence in NE and then to chart ways to deal with these institutions. We look forward to your early confirmation and participation. Venue: CASA Retreat Center, Mawlien, Ribhoi District, Meghalaya In solidarity, NOTE: your early confirmation is important, as it will enable the organizers to accordingly book accommodation and other arrangements. |
