March 12-16th 2007

Learn how to make a village sustainable. A tough challenge, but there are simple ways to make it happen
Why a village remains poor despite years of development programmes? Why a certain village is always prosperous? Why is high growth in Indian economy not translating into prosperous villages? Why is gross national produce (GNP) not an indicator of real wealth? Why will conventional development model not make village poverty-free? Why is gross nature produce (GNP) the answer to sustainable village?

Centre for Science and Environment announces a five-day refresher workshop on how to use environment to eradicate poverty in rural areas, an initiative of the Anil Agrawal Green College. The workshop aims at answering the above questions that together have clue to a sustainable village.

The workshop involves classroom debate and field trip dissection.

For more than two decades CSE has been campaigning and researching on the linkages between environment and poverty. We believe that India's poverty is ecological in nature. Thus to eradicate poverty we have to regenerate our ecology. Many villages have done so. CSE has been studying their experiences. Development models evolved out of community initiatives point that if we understand the ecological nature of poverty the road to prosperity is within reach.

The refresher workshop aims to learn from these models and to put in place a framework for sustainable village. The workshop is designed such a way that it not only conceptually clears the linkages between environment-poverty but also demonstrate its feasibility through field trips to model villages. The workshop draws its content from experiences of numerous communities successful in sustainable development.  So this equips participants with crucial understanding of sustainable development.

What the workshop will mean to the participants?
* To help understand the nature of poverty in India
