Pakistan-India Peoples' Forum for Peace & Democracy (PIPFPD) and Peace Mumbai organized a candle light get together to celebrate the 60th year of Independence of Pakistan and India at the Gateway of India, Mumbai at 8.30 pm on 14th August 2007. A 100-strong crowd representing people from all walks of life gathered to celebrate the occasion.
Actor - Activist Atul Kulkarni read out the pledge, which was repeated by all the people like Chitra Palekar (film-maker), Anand Patwardhan (film-maker), Pushpa Bhave etc.
The pledge that we all took reads
"The people of India and Pakistan fought as one for freedom for
colonial rule, before we were divided by national boundaries. Today 60
years after we won Independence, we pledge that we will stand united to
fight for democracy, peace and justice; for a nuclear-free, visa-free
South Asia based on mutual respect, sovereignty and equality. We shall
forge friendship between the people of both countries, attempt to find
peaceful solutions to all our conflicts, support the aspirations of
people in both countries, and forge a new identity as South Asians with
a common culture, heritage, and history."
Some of the people who attended the programme commented that
initiatives like this involve the common man and create awareness about
the need for love and understanding in the sub continent.
