Press Statement

Peoples' Media Initiaitve (PMI) strongly condemns dastardly attack on the office of Outlook magazine. Shiv Sainiks vandalised the Nariman Point office, Mumbai, on the eve of India's 60th Independence day. It was an assault on Media's Independence.

Around 10-12 Shiv Sainiks barged into the office, damaged computers and smashed glass partitions and started shouting slogans praising Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray.

It is believed Shiv Sainiks attacked magazine's office as Outlook in it's Special Independence Day issue has included Bal Thackeray in a list of "Villains of India". PMI believes in the Freedom of Press and attacking Media is an assault on the Freedom of Expression and Speech.

PMI also condemns Mumbai polices action of confiscation of the copies of Outlook. Police has no right to confiscate the copies without following due procedure of law.

PMI demands immediate arrest of culprits and release of confiscated copies of Outlook. It is responsibility of the State to provide an atmosphere where media can work without any fear.
