philembassyprotest1.jpg30 protestors, most of them Filipinos, entered the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok on Thursday, March. 3, to demand the lifting of the State of National Emergency decree (Presidential Proclamation 1017).
In a meeting with Ambassador Antonio Rodriguez, the protesters also urged the Philippine envoy and Embassy staff “to join us in demanding that [Gloria Macapagal Arroyo] vacate the presidency as soon as possible.  “We ask you and your staff,” the letter continued, “to uphold the integrity of the foreign service and declare your loyalty to the Republic instead of a person who has usurped power through illegal means.”

ASEAN ACTIONS MUST REFLECT URGENCY OF SITUATION IN BURMA
CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO ENSURE CYCLONE NARGIS SURVIVORS GET AID

The members of SAPA demand that ASEAN immediately take a pro-active stand to ensure that the Burmese authorities stop blocking delivery of urgently needed international aid - both supplies and expertise – to the 2.5 million survivors of Cyclone Nargis who are hanging onto life by a thread. Otherwise, ASEAN risks being seen as callous, irrelevant and hypocritical.

It is time that our regional grouping proves that it is indeed "One ASEAN at the Heart of Dynamic Asia" in addressing the biggest humanitarian disaster to hit the region since the Aceh tsunami. Failure to do so will undermine the credibility ASEAN worked so hard to build at its 40th anniversary.

PRESS RELEASE: Research shows Arroyo administration failing to meet own targets

As Arroyo prepares her state of the nation address on Monday, social analysts have given her poor marks for missing development goals set by the government itself in 2004, with only two years left until the 2010 target.

New studies by the University of the Philippines - Center for Labor Justice (UP CLJ) and the Bangkok and Manila-based policy think tank Focus on the Global South revealed Arroyo's slow progress towards achieving key targets on economic growth, poverty reduction, and job generation.

The Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP), crafted in 2004, expressly aims to generate ten million jobs by 2010, or roughly 1.6 million jobs each year, reduce poverty incidence to below 20%, and accelerate GDP growth to 7-8%.

During the 13th ASEAN Summit in Singapore in November 2007, ASEAN Leaders signed the ASEAN Charter, or what is touted as the Constitution for the regional association.

The ASEAN Charter specifies lines of responsibility and obligations of members, establishes new mechanisms for operations, as well as mandates a revitalized ASEAN Secretariat.

8 September 2008

Several events have occurred since the Calatagan farmers launched their "pre-walk" in 1 September 2008.  On that day, the farmers put up streamers that contain their calls along the road of Barangays Baha and Talibayog.  On 4 September, Bishop Broderick Pabillo, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Manila and Chair of the NASSA, celebrated a Holy Mass in Calatagan.  A day after, the farmers received the Resolution of the DAR Secretary denying the farmers' Motion for Reconsideration on their petition to cover the contested 507-hectare land under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).  On 7 September, Akbayan partylist Representative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel also visited Calatagan to express solidarity with the farmers.
