12-14 July 2008
Bangkok

Focus on the Global South is co-organizing a conference on climate justice from July 12-14 2008 in Bangkok.  The conference aims to bring together civil society organizations, networks and movements from across Asia to collectively discuss and learn about climate change issues and bring  new perspectives and analyses to the climate debates from local/national movements and organisations.
In Bali in December 2007,  there emerged a strong call from various organizations and movements to redefine the terms of the climate  negotiations to reflect a strong justice dimension that takes into consideration the historical responsibilities of industrialized countries', puts forward a strong critique of the proposed techno-fixes and market-based solutions that burden poor peoples and communities, and proposes an alternative development paradigm as the long term solution to the climate crisis.

The climate justice conference in Bangkok would be a good opportunity to continue the discussion on climate change issues and proposed solutions in the Asian context and from the perspective of organizations and movements across the region.

While the conference is open and welcomes participation from groups that could support their own way to Bangkok, Focus would also like to support seven (7) participants from the Philippines to the conference. We envision a delegation comprised of representatives from: Farmers, Fishers, Women, Indigenous Peoples, Labor, and Groups working on natural resources and environment issues (water, energy, etc). The delegation should also be gender balanced and reflect a good geographical mix with participants from Visayas and Mindanao as well.

All those interested are requested to send us an email at signifying your interest in participating in the conference and stating how you think the climate justice conference relates to your current  or future work plans. Endorsements from networks are also welcome and would be given due consideration.

The deadline for submission of nominations and expressions of interest is on June 15, 2008.

Thank you.
