With the deadline for submission now extended, Focus renews its invitation to both amateur and professional filmmakers—youth, women, overseas Filipinos, their families or people working on migrant issues—to submit their proposals for the EDSA Mo, EDSA Ko video grant on or before July 24, 2011. This video grant initiative was launched in February to coincide with the launch of the EDSA Stories project, which includes a website. You may join one of these four categories: open category (both for amateur and professional); youth category (open to those born after July 1, 1990); women category (for women applicants only); migrant category (open to overseas Filipinos or their immediate families based in the Philippines and those who work on migrant issues). Each of the 10 selected grantees/applicants shall be awarded P30,000 seed fund.
It’s easy to join and beat the deadline. Simply submit the following:
1) Duly accomplished application form (downloadable at edsastories.focusweb.org);
2) Brief biography, for individual applicant; if it’s a team that’s submitting, include brief resumes of all members;
3) Concept paper of proposed video/film based on the theme “Re-imagining EDSA”; include initial inventory of projected audio-visual materials to be used in the video you will produce plus a timetable for the production.
You may submit the requirements personally to Focus offices on 19 Maginhawa Street, UP Village, Diliman, Quezon City, or through mail post-marked July 24, 2011, or via email. If included in the initial long list of selected applicants, those who submitted through email will be required to go to Focus and submit their printed, signed application forms. Focus-Philippines Launches "Transitions"
Focus-Philippines launched its most recent publication “Transitions/Yearbook 2010,” on May 21 at Annabel’s Restaurant in Quezon City, through a forum titled “One Year After P-Noy’s Election: To Where/What are we Transitioning?” Main speakers were Yuen Abana (labor sector) and Joann Fernandez (rural/peasant sector) who talked about the people’s aspirations; Dr. Prospero de Vera, Vice-President for Public Affairs of UP Diliman, who discussed the current issues in the anti-corruption campaign of the government; and Dr. Rene Ofreneo, former dean of UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations, who challenged the administration’s continuing promotion of “neo-liberal” economic policies. Representatives of non-government/civil society organizations and government attended the forum-launch; Agriculture Undersecretary Ernesto Ordoñez and Office of Public Affairs Undersecretary Chito Gascon were there. Below is the book’s introduction by its editor Clarissa V. Militante.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Citizens' Peace Watch Fact-Finding Mission to Zamboanga City and Sulu Report Available
The Citizens' Peace Watch is an independent initiative of concerned citizens brought together to continuously report on US military presence and intervention in the country.
This report hopes to be a resource for policy-makers, journalists, academics, social movements and civil society organizations.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Citizens’ Peace Watch fact-finding mission to Zamboanga City and Sulu from February 18-21 found proof reinforcing concerns that
- the US has established military basing in the Philippines
- the US is involved in actual combat operations in the country
- the US military has, in complicity with the Philippine military, committed human rights violations in the Philippines
- the US is conducting operations outside the control of the Philippine government and military
- the US military’s so-called humanitarian projects are mere cover for military operations that do not benefit the local population
- US basing and intervention in the country is contributing to insecurity and leading to an escalation in conflict
